Experts’ Workshop 13/11/20

13 November 2020 | 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm | Tunis, Downtown | Hosted by Salma Kossemtini and Emily Sarsam

An Emergence of an Art Scene: Structures and networks
within foundations, non-profits, and galleries across the MENA region

This workshop will explore cultural structures emerging in Tunisia and consider case studies of established organizations across the MENA region, including Darat al Funun, Amman, Jordan, Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, Egypt, and Sfier Semler, Beirut, Lebanon. We will look specifically at ways in which curators, critics, and artists have engaged with each entity. How exchanges have provided the opportunity for impactful collaborations and partnerships, and consequent networks. In addition, we will touch upon ways that the programs have been made relevant to the context through aspects such as education and audience development.

The session will include visits to “Le 32 Bis” and “Central Tunis”, where the participants will have the opportunity to meet with the directors of each space to learn about their structures, facilities, and goals in order to gain an understanding of the possibilities that are emerging in the local scene and what prospects they offer to practicing curators in Tunisia.
